This painting shows a strange, powerful tree that almost looks like it’s alive—or turning into something else. Its twisted roots and branches resemble claws or bones, and the upper part forms the shape of a dragon’s head, emerging from the bark like a spirit taking form. Bright white beams cut through the image, like rays of light or barriers, slicing across a dark red forest in the background. The scene feels intense and mysterious, as if something ancient and wild is being awakened or revealed in the shadows.
This is actually a real tree that I used to see all the time as we would drive to certain area to go hiking and camping up on the backside of Mammoth Mountain California. The tree was obviously struck by lightning and yet still alive and growing from the side of the lightning strike…I always saw the head of a dragon I the tree. This was one of the earliest pieces in my journey.
