This piece is a surreal take on a compass — not just as a tool for direction, but as a portal, a gateway between dimensions. The center explodes open like a vortex, spinning out shards and markings that hint at motion, shift, and energy. On one side, dark clouds and deep purples swirl like a brewing storm or a heavy memory. On the other, the clouds lighten, glowing with turquoise and soft blues, like a new beginning cracking through the static.
The rings of the compass twist and bend, almost like they’ve been pulled through time or memory. The numbers — 260, 360 — aren’t just degrees, they feel like spells or markers of something deeper, something symbolic.
This isn’t a literal landscape. It’s more about that feeling of standing at a threshold — between light and dark, the known and the unknown. A moment of decision, of movement. A shift not just in space, but in consciousness.

I painted this piece live at a small event at a place called “Lakeside Pizza” near Jake’s in North Lake Tahoe — back when I was just beginning to find my rhythm as an artist and as a local in the Tahoe community. It was still early in my journey, but things were starting to shift. I was painting more events, getting recognized for my work, and had just started dating someone new. There was this strong feeling that I was stepping into a new chapter — not just creatively, but personally.
This painting captures that transition. It’s a surreal compass, but instead of pointing north, it opens up — like a portal or dimensional rift. One side is stormy, dark, and chaotic; the other is lit with glowing turquoise and softness. For me, it represents that moment of shift — when you’re not quite sure where you’re heading, but you can feel the momentum pulling you forward. It’s about navigating through the unknown, trusting the motion, and embracing the change.
